(BMLTV) LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, VA, August 26,2013 - A pilot's failure to perceive mountainous terrain in his flight path caused an F-16C Falcon to crash April 3, 2013, according to an Air Combat Command Accident Investigation Board report released today.
The aircraft crashed into a mountainside 10 nautical miles southeast of Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. The pilot did not attempt to eject from his aircraft and was killed in the crash. The aircraft and pilot were assigned to the 77th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron at Bagram Airfield.
When the accident occurred, the pilot was the flight lead of two F-16s supporting ground forces assigned in the United States Central Command's area of responsibility during a combat mission.
The mishap did not cause civilian injuries or damage civilian property. However, the aircraft and on-board munitions were destroyed upon impact with a loss valued at approximately $30.9 million.
